Mandelbrot has been called a visionary[13] and a maverick.[14] His informal and passionate style of writing and his emphasis on visual and geometric intuition (supported by the inclusion of numerous illustrations) made The Fractal Geometry of Nature accessible to non-specialists. The book sparked widespread popular interest in fractals and contributed to chaos theory and other fields of science and mathematics.
Had no one described and illuminated what many saw as just anomalies we may well not have the fine detailed graphics seen every day on our HD televisions and computer screens. Much of the compression that makes such imagery possible today is based of fractal geometry and chaos theory.
